The EU is committed to promoting unified charging technology and charging interfaces that can support multiple electronic products in order to reduce electronic waste. On November 23, 2022, Directive EN IEC62680-1-3/62680-1-2 on EU electronic product standards was issued: requiring electronic product manufacturers to use USB-C charging interface technology in their products, and requiring small and medium-sized portable electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and cameras, as well as laptops, to comply with USB-C charging interface requirements by 2024 and 2026, respectively.



IEC62680 testing equipment instrument GRL-USB-PD-C2-EPR, formerly USB-IF Association USB PD certification testing instrument, performs PD protocol certification testing. IEC62680-1-2 and IEC62680-1-3 absorb USB-IF USB PD and Type-C specifications, and can currently be used for protocol testing and certification corresponding to IEC62680. IEC62680-1-2 mainly defines the USB PD power supply specification; IEC62680-1-3 is a specification for USB Type-C cables and connectors.


This instruction covers 13 types of devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld game consoles, portable speakers, e-books, keyboards, mice, portable navigation, and laptops.



The mandatory implementation date of the directive is December 28, 2024 (the implementation date for laptops is April 28, 2026). After the mandatory date, devices that meet the requirements of the directive can enter the EU market.


The content of EN IEC 62680-1-3 includes three aspects: Type-C connectors, Type-C cables, and Type-C protocols. In addition, it also involves pin definitions, mechanical structure requirements, size requirements, electrical performance requirements, master-slave and power supply role definitions, power supply capabilities, related handshake protocols, and state machine definitions for Type-C devices.


The content of EN IEC 62680-1-2 is a fast charging protocol based on Type-C CC pin. Both electrical equipment and power supply equipment can negotiate and adjust voltage, current, and charging direction. This specification provides detailed requirements for electrical requirements, physical layer, protocol layer, system strategy, state machine, and power rules.


Therefore, strict testing is required for products to meet standards.
