Updates to the RCM regulations in Australia and New Zealand — AS/NZS 4417.2:2020 Amendment 1:2026

 To ensure electrical safety, Australian and New Zealand regulations require electrical equipment to be marked with the RCM mark in accordance with AS/NZS 4417.1 & 2 and the requirements for Electrical Equipment and Safety Systems (EESS), otherwise it may not be sold in the Australian and New Zealand markets. AS/NZS 4417.2 details the specific regulatory requirements that equipment must comply with this standard.



Amendment 1 to AS/NZS 4417.2:2020 was officially published on February 12, 2026.


Arc Welders – standards have changed to IEC 60974-1 for inverter types and AS 60974.1 or IEC 60947-6 for other types, AS/NZS 60335.1 clause 30.2 also now required, as well as a requirement the cord and plug are supplied rated for continuous operation current. Transition date is 12 February 2027.


Heat pump hot water heaters incorporating an element have been added to the water heater definition and require certification to AS/NZS 60335.2.40 and 60335.2.21. Transition date is 12 February 2027.


Heat pump hot water heaters without an element are now level 2 and must comply with AS/NZS 60335.2.40 and be registered in the EESS database. Transition date is 12 February 2027.



EV Chargers are now level 3. Transition date is 12 February 2028.



Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are now level 3 and require certification to SA TS 5398. The transition date is 12 February 2028.



Cord Extension sets are now level 2 and must comply with AS/NZS 3199 and be registered in the EESS database. Transition date for this is 12 February 2027.


Portable Power Stations are now level 3 and must be certified to AS/NZS 4763. The transition date for this is 12 February 2028.
