Australian and New Zealand RCM Regulation Update — AS/NZS 4417.2:2020 Amendment 1:2026
To ensure electrical safety, Australian and New Zealand regulations require electrical equipment to be marked with the RCM mark in accordance with AS/NZS 4417.1 & 2 and the requirements of Electrical Equipment and Safety Systems (EESS), otherwise it may not be sold in the Australian and New Zealand markets. AS/NZS 4417.2 details the specific regulatory requirements that equipment must comply with this standard.
Amendment AS/NZS 4417.2:2020 Amendment 1 was officially published on February 12, 2026.
Regulatory Changes Summary
Welding Machines – For inverter-type welding machines, the applicable standard has changed to IEC 60974-1. For other types, the applicable standards are AS 60974.1 or IEC 60947-6. Clause 30.2 of AS/NZS 60335.1 is also mandatory. It also requires that the power of the wiring and plug be sufficient to ensure continuous operation of the welding machine. The transition period is until February 12, 2027.
Arc Welders – standards have changed to IEC 60974-1 for inverter types and AS 60974.1 or IEC 60947-6 for other types. Clause 30.2 of AS/NZS 60335.1 is now required, as well as the wiring and plug must be supplied rated for continuous operation. The transition date is February 12, 2027.
Heat pump water heaters with heating elements are now included in the category of water heaters, and the applicable standards are AS/NZS 60335.2.40 and 60335.2.21. The transition period is until February 12, 2027.

EV chargers are Level 3 products. The transition period is February 12, 2028.
EV Chargers are now Level 3. The transition date is February 12, 2028.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are also defined as Level 3 products. Their certification standard is SA TS 5398. The transition period ends on February 12, 2028.
Cable extension sets are now Level 2 and must comply with AS/NZS 3199 and be registered in the EESS database. The transition date for this is February 12, 2027.
Portable charging stations are defined as Level 3 products, with certification based on AS/NZS 4763. The transition period is until February 12, 2028.
Portable Power Stations are now level 3 and must be certified to AS/NZS 4763. The transition date for this is 12 February 2028
