How to Measure Harmonic Current in Multifunctional Products
Harmonic currents are generated by certain electronic devices and power systems, such as electronic switches, rectifiers, and frequency converters. These devices convert sinusoidal alternating current into periodic non-sinusoidal current, which includes many frequency components, not just the fundamental frequency. Harmonic currents can cause many problems for power systems and related equipment. Currently, various multifunctional products are appearing on the market. According to the IEC 61000-3-2 standard, the requirements for multifunctional products are as follows:
First-come, first-served principle: If it can be achieved through reasonable settings, each function of the multifunctional device can be tested independently. When each function of the device meets the requirements of its corresponding category, the device meets the test requirements of this document.
For example: If a fan light can control both the light and the fan's on/off state, then the light function should be measured separately according to Category C, and the fan function separately according to Category A. Both must be met simultaneously to be considered compliant with the standard.
For devices that do not clearly indicate how to operate each function individually, the manufacturer can provide an instruction manual for testing, explaining how to individually achieve the corresponding function of the device. These manuals can detail the internal changes of the device, and the device should be tested accordingly.
If no test instructions are provided, or if it is not possible to test each function individually, the equipment meets the most stringent limit requirements (generally, Class C limits are more stringent) if all its functions are enabled simultaneously. If a function of the equipment can be significantly considered a primary function compared to the other functions, the equipment can be tested with all functions enabled simultaneously, and compliance can be determined using the limits of its primary function.
