Thailand to Phase Out 2G/3G Equipment! Import and Certification Banned from June 30, 2025

Thailand to Phase Out 2G/3G Equipment! Import and Certification Banned from June 30, 2025

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand recently announced that, starting June 30, 2025, it will completely ban the import and certification of telecommunications equipment that only supports 2G and 3G networks. This means that mobile phones, IoT devices, and other communication terminals sold in the Thai market thereafter must support at least 4G or 5G networks; otherwise, they will not be able to obtain NBTC certification.

1. Scope of the Ban

Physical devices that only support 2G or 3G networks (such as feature phones, older IoT terminals, etc.) will not pass NBTC certification and will not be allowed to be imported.

Multi-mode devices are not affected: Devices that support both 4G/5G and 2G/3G (such as most smartphones) can still apply for certification and be sold normally.

2. Implementation Time

Effective on June 30, 2025. After that, NBTC will no longer test or certify 2G/3G equipment.

3. Policy Background

Thailand is accelerating the rollout of 4G/5G networks and phasing out… The outdated 2G/3G technology will be phased out to optimize spectrum resource utilization and improve nationwide communication efficiency.

NBTC stated that this move aims to promote the upgrading of telecommunications infrastructure and ensure users receive a faster and more stable network experience.

Impact Scope

Manufacturers and importers: Need to adjust product strategies to ensure new equipment complies with 4G/5G standards.

Operators: Major Thai telecom operators have already been gradually shutting down 2G/3G services; the new regulations will accelerate this process.

Consumers: Users still using 2G/3G devices need to upgrade their equipment as soon as possible to avoid affecting normal communication.

Industry Trends: Many countries worldwide, including Singapore, Australia, and the United States, have begun to gradually shut down 2G/3G networks. Thailand's policy further indicates that 4G/5G has become the mainstream global communication standard, and low-speed networks will eventually be phased out.
