What is NRTL certification?
NRTL, also known as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, is a product
safety certification system officially recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States. It is the most critical safety access certificate for products entering the US and Canadian markets.
NRTL is not a single certificate, but a collective term for qualified safety certifications. All product safety certifications issued by OSHA accredited institutions belong to the NRTL category. Common certifications in the market, such as ETL, UL, CSA, MET, etc., are authoritative certifications under the NRTL system and have equal legal effect in the North American market. Customs clearance, sales, and platform listing are treated equally.
NRTL certification mainly targets electrical products, lamps, household appliances, power tools, wires, accessories and other products. It strictly follows the American ANSI/UL and Canadian CSA standards for testing, focusing on key indicators such as electrical safety, insulation performance, temperature rise, fire prevention, structural safety, etc., to reduce product use risks from the source and ensure consumer safety.
In the North American market, NRTL certification is generally a mandatory entry threshold. NRTL certification is regarded as a necessary qualification by Amazon, Wal Mart, Home Depot and other large e-commerce and chain channels, as well as local customs, insurance institutions and engineering procurement. Without NRTL certification, products cannot be cleared through customs, are prohibited from sale, and may face risks such as delisting, fines, and recalls.
NRTL certification is positioned differently from domestic CQC and 3C certifications. CQC is a voluntary quality certification in China, focusing on brand endorsement and channel access in the domestic market; 3C is a mandatory certification in China, which is the legal bottom line for products sold domestically. NRTL is an exclusive safety certification for the North American market, only applicable to products exported to the US and Canada regions. It is a safety pass recognized by local regulations and cannot be replaced by domestic certification.
For foreign trade enterprises, NRTL certification is a necessary compliance procedure for expanding into the North American market. It can meet local regulatory requirements, avoid customs clearance risks, and enhance product credibility and competitiveness. It is the most direct reflection of product safety and enterprise strength.
